What is IEC 60335-2-81 ?

IEC 60335-2-81 and IEC 60335-2-88 are two important safety standards that apply to household and similar electrical appliances. These standards were developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to establish guidelines for the design, construction, and operation of these appliances.

IEC 60335-2-77, also known as the International Electrotechnical Commission Standard 2-77, is focused on the safety of consumer products, including electrical equipment, low-voltage electrical equipment, and medical devices. It sets out a series of requirements for design, construction, and testing to minimize the risk of electrical accidents or injuries.

On the other hand, IEC 60335-2-88, also known as the International Electrotechnical Commission Standard for "Safety of household and similar electrical appliances", is specifically designed to ensure the safety of various household electrical appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, and more.

The primary objective of IEC 60335-2-88 is to protect consumers from potential hazards associated with household electrical appliances. To achieve this, the standard defines specific safety requirements for appliances, including electrical safety, thermal safety, and mechanical safety.

To ensure compliance with the requirements of IEC 60335-2-88, manufacturers must conduct testing to verify that their products meet the relevant safety standards. This testing typically includes measuring the appliance's performance, safety features, and user ease of use.

It is important to note that IEC 60335-2-88 is not applicable to all electrical appliances. Some appliances, such as small handheld devices, are instead subject to other safety standards, such as IEC 60954-1.

In conclusion, IEC 60335-2-77 and IEC 60335-2-88 are two important safety standards that apply to various household and similar electrical appliances. While both standards are developed by the IEC to ensure the safety of consumers, they have distinct requirements that manufacturers must comply with to ensure their products meet the relevant safety standards.
