Can I use Type 2 on CCS?

Overview of Type 2 Charging and CCS

Type 2 charging has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially in Europe, as it provides a fast and reliable way to charge electric vehicles (EVs). Combined Charging System (CCS) is another widely used charging standard that supports both AC and DC charging. In this article, we will explore the compatibility between Type 2 charging and CCS, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Understanding Type 2 Charging

Type 2 charging, also known as Mennekes charging, is a standardized method for EV charging. It uses a single-phase or three-phase power supply to deliver AC charging. The Type 2 connector, featuring seven pins, allows for higher charging capacity compared to older charging standards. As it became the de facto standard in Europe, most public charging stations are equipped with Type 2 sockets.

One advantage of Type 2 charging is the flexibility it offers in terms of charging power. Depending on the infrastructure and capabilities of the vehicle, Type 2 connectors can provide an AC charging power ranging from 3.7 kW to 22 kW, making it suitable for a wide range of EVs.

The Compatibility between Type 2 and CCS

CCS, developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), integrates AC and DC charging into a single system, offering a versatile solution for EV owners. While CCS primarily uses a specific DC charging connector, it also supports AC charging through a Type 2 connector.

Therefore, EVs equipped with Type 2 connectors can be charged at CCS stations using the AC charging mode. The CCS charging stations typically have separate plugs for AC and DC charging, and users with Type 2-equipped EVs can simply connect their vehicles using the Type 2 plug.

It is important to note that while Type 2 connectors are compatible with CCS stations for AC charging, not all CCS stations support AC charging. It is advisable to check the specifications of the charging station or consult with the charging network provider to ensure compatibility before attempting to charge.
