What is the IEC standard 61511 ?

The functional safety lifecycle is divided into key phases, which are as follows:

Safety Instrumented System (SIS) Design: In this phase, the SIS is designed to meet the functional safety requirements established in the conceptual design phase. This includes the selection of sensors, actuators, and control valves, as well as the design of the control system.

Installation, Commissioning, and Testing (ICCT): This phase involves the installation of the SIS, commissioning, and testing of the system to ensure that it meets the functional safety requirements.

Operations and Maintenance: In this phase, the SIS is operated and maintained to ensure that it continues to meet the functional safety requirements. This includes the monitoring of performance, troubleshooting, and repair of any issues that may arise.

decommissioning: This phase involves the decommissioning of the SIS when it is no longer needed. This includes the removal of the system, the destruction of any remaining components, and the documentation of the system's history.

By following the functional safety lifecycle, organizations can establish a consistent approach to managing functional safety, which can enhance overall operational safety.
